Raining Stewed Tomatoes

Hi Annie,
You know I've long been proud of my kids' eating habits. I don't force food on them but it is a rule in our house, you must always be open to trying new things. Typically, that results in them loving whatever I feed them because I make a simple point of feeding them good simple food. And sometimes they surprise me by loving something I might not totally love (eg, salmon skin). Last night I experienced that great feeling of parental pride when Adler asked for his third-helping of his grandmother's home-made stewed tomatoes. He said, "Wow I love these so much. I wish it would rain stewed tomatoes." Good job, son; good job, Mom-mom.

Quick Stewed Tomatoes
  • Whatever fresh tomatoes you have available (plums, cherries, etc)
  • Couple stalks celery
  • Half an onion
  • Butter (1 to 3 tbsp, depending on how rich you want to make it)
  • Dash of honey
  • Basil (optional)
  • S&P
Melt butter in small stock pan and add onion and celery. Cook about 5 minutes until soft. Throw in tomatoes and cook down for about 10 minutes or so. Sprinkle with salt and pepper, basil if you have it, and stir in just a bit of local honey.

For kids, I go a bit heavy on the butter and honey.

May your spring showers be of the stewed tomato variety!
