Howdy Annie!
I'm pissed again at The New Yorker but really I'm sickened by Monsanto and big ag.
1. The New Yorker magazine, for its second time (that I've noticed) in my 15-year subscription history, accepted a back cover ad from Monsanto.
2. Monsanto is lifting and shifting Lennon's "Imagine" in its ad campaign. Yeah, I know John didn't trademark the word but we all think of him when we see "imagine" right? But I digress...and I'm not even going to elaborate on the ad and how they've hijacked Lennon's peaceful notion and how they continue to mutate agriculture.
You know I'm still making my way through The Omnivore's Dilemna because I can only read it in small doses. It's just too jam packed with info that gets me down that I have to balance reading it with The New Yorker. But when last week's issue arrived face down with the Monsanto ad right there in my face using the terms "imagine, sustainable, and conservation" I did a little crazy Rumpelstiltskin dance in the driveway.
Michael Pollan had a statistic that I'll need to confirm but it was something like by 2050 GMOs will be pervasive.
I'm even more motivated and compelled to educate people about good food now.
Yesterday in the supermarket I carried out two random acts of good-food-education business. One: I advised the woman trying to buy fish at the seafood counter not to buy fish from China and helped her pick out some shrimp that was harmless. Explained how to cook it simply. After she got over my forthrightness she smiled. We bumped into each other in another aisle and I saw her reading a label.
Two: While the checkout guy was putting my groceries in my bags he asked "Is this natural stuff any good? Is it better than the other stuff?" I asked what specifically he was referring to. He said, "You know all of it." I said, "you know like anything...it depends. But what I always try to do is stay away from processed." I went off a little bit on HFCS but his eyes glazed over. In the end I said, "eating good food makes you think and feel better."
Flippin' Monsanto. Grrr.
I did find this place, The EnviroMedia Greenwashing Index, and signed up to get their newsletter.
Going into the kitchen to slooooow cook dinner,
Marianne
PS...I was going to tell you how Adler and Sylvia are all over salads these days but I'll save that for later.
